You finally decided to take the leap from Etsy OR you’re at least taking the steps to get there. Having your own website can be intimidating though, right? Especially on Shopify, which is such a massive system to learn! Maybe you built your Shopify store, set up your collections, wrote your product descriptions and hit publish. Now you’re waiting for Google to notice.
….and waiting. And, waiting. And…. is something wrong?
Shopify is one of the best platforms for small ecommerce businesses and it has solid built-in SEO features. Honestly, it’s the e-commerce platform I recommend most to businesses that are hoping to scale!
But, even with those SEO features built-in, it doesn’t mean your new shop is optimized for SEO. In fact, most small shops are leaving significant search visibility on the table because of a handful of completely fixable issues.
Most shop owners pour their energy into individual product pages and completely ignore their collection pages. Collection pages can actually be a goldmine for SEO!
These pages often rank for broader category searches, things like “soy candles,” “handmade incense sticks” or “non-toxic wax melts.” Those are the searches people make before they know your brand exists, which makes collection pages your first ones to show with Google.
Here’s a mistake that’s incredibly common and super easy to fix: duplicate or generic page titles and meta descriptions across products.
If you have 30 candles and every product page title follows the same template (“Candle | Your Shop Name”), Google sees 30 pages that look nearly identical. That’s not great for rankings and it’s a missed opportunity to capture specific searches.
Three things kill Shopify SEO at the image level and both are invisible to your customers but very visible to Google.
Shopify auto-generates URL slugs when you create products, and those auto-generated slugs are often… not great. You might end up with /products/mahogany-teak-scented-candle-copy if you ever duplicated a product, or a slug that doesn’t match the actual product name.
Often what happens (which I’m guilty of, too!) is when you duplicate another listing from a related product, it can keep that “copy” in the URL. Just make sure you update it!
They should match the product name exactly, use hyphens between words, and never include “-copy” or any duplicate indicators. If you’ve been building your store for a while, it’s worth auditing your slugs and cleaning up anything that doesn’t match. Or, let me audit them for you!
“Britt was absolutely phenomenal to work with! I started with the SEO audit and it was incredibly thorough and informative, she leaves no stone unturned. There was definitely a workload involved in implementing everything, so I ended up hiring her to make the changes directly through her 1-day incentive, and it was SOO worth it. She was kind, professional, and even provided video tutorials so I can make adjustments on my own in the future. If you need to spruce up your store and get serious about SEO, I seriously can’t recommend her enough!” – Skye from SkyeLight
This one surprises people, but your About page has real SEO value, especially for small, handmade, or values-driven shops.
Google cares about who is behind a website, especially after their Spring 2026 update. A strong About page that includes your name, where you’re located, when you started, any credentials and what makes your products different gives Google context that builds trust. If you make your products in a specific city or state, that information should appear as actual text on the page, not just embedded in an image where Google can’t read it.
Your About page should also have a clear call to action that links to your shop. Don’t let them get to the end of that page without something to do!
I’m ALWAYS a big fan of having a blog. Not just for SEO-related purposes (hellooooo, traffic!) but to also educate your clients. For example, if you want to go after informational search traffic, like the people Googling “what does sandalwood smell like” or “best non-toxic candles for small spaces”, blog posts are exactly how you do it!
When you’re ready to start, the structure matters as much as the content. Set a goal for your posts to link to a few of your products and even another blog post, if you have one published that makes sense to link to. If you’re not sure how much to write, 700-1000 words is a reasonable floor for posts that have any chance of ranking.
And, for fuck sake, do not use AI to write your blog posts. Google wants to know that it’s you and wants to know your first-hand experience + expertise!
If you get through all of that and want to know what else is holding your shop back, that’s exactly what my SEO + Website audit is for! Pop Impact audits Shopify stores and delivers a full breakdown of what to fix, in what order, with exactly how to do it, even if you’re not technical!
“Recently worked with Britt on a one day SEO intensive. Going in, I felt like I was doing a lot wrong and not seeing results. She took the time before even being booked to explain everything in depth, helped me understand it and what needs to be fixed/corrected. She is very hands on and her personality shines throughout her work. At the end of my time with britt, I felt like i was on the right track. She’s the best and highly recommend!” – Taylor S.
